== Season Notes ==

Coming off the 6-9 season in 1897, the team had hopes for a better campaign. Newspapers report that Allen J. Greer was selected as the Manager and H. M. Edmonds was elected as Captain (source: [https://www.newspapers.com/article/knoxville-sentinel-1898jan15-ut-athlet/105047559/ ''The Knoxville Sentinel'' (Knoxville, TN), January 15, 1898]).

The team had high hopes of a good season, with reports of several opponents (Central University, Centre College, Sewannee, and the University of Alabmama) being lined up. These games did not come to be played.

In May newspapers were reporting that Frank Moffett had assembled a picked team that was playing games against both the Army team from Chattanooga and Maryville. Several of the UT players were on that team, including Edmonds, Greer, and Wilson.

The university team went 0-2 for their very short season, scoring just 9 runs, with their opponent scoring 22.
