Season Notes
Coming off the 6-9 season in 1897, the team had hopes for a better campaign. Newspapers report that Allen J. Greer was selected as the Manager and H. M. Edmonds was elected as Captain (source: The Knoxville Sentinel (Knoxville, TN), January 15, 1898).
The team had high hopes of a good season, with reports of several opponents (Central University, Centre College, Sewannee, and the University of Alabmama) being lined up. These games did not come to be played.
In early May newspapers were reporting that Frank Moffett had assembled a picked team that was playing games against both the Army team from Chattanooga and also with the McCormicks of Maryville. Several of the UT players were on that team, including Edmonds, Greer, and Wilson. (sources: The Morning Tribune (Knoxville, TN), May 10, 1898 and The Morning Tribune (Knoxville, TN), May 13, 1898).
There was talk in late May that the university team would travel to Sewanee or that they might engage Maryville college (source: The Morning Tribune (Knoxville, TN), May 30, 1898). Neither series was to be played.
The University of Tennessee team went 0-2 for their very short season, scoring just 10 runs, with their opponent scoring 19.
