Manager Dale Alexander of Knoxville protested that the light failure nullified the hit, but Plate Umpire Eddie Hearn held the tally counted and 2,355 cash customers filed out of the park. Later, the official scorer was hastily summoned from his residence to the park, where Umpire Hearn explained that League President C.M. Llewellyn, in a telephone conversation, had ordered play resumed at the point before Milne made his hit, with the bases loaded. Milne then grounded out and Lew Urcho flied out to force the game into an extra inning.
