  • Further evidence of the effectiveness of President Billy Evans' speed-up rules: Chattanooga, 10, Knoxville, 8; 30 hits, nine errors and 11 walks - all in two hours and five minutes. - The Sporting News - May 6, 1943, page 11
  • Mickey Urban, second baseman of the Knoxville Smokies, who was called to his Wilkes-Barre, Pa., home by his draft board, was given a three-months deferment and returned to his team to play until summoned. - The Sporting News - May 13, 1943, page 10
  • Six circuit clouts, two of them by Jim Matthews of Knoxville, were made during the Chattanooga-Knoxville game which the Lookouts won, 23-9, May 6. Kvasnak, Frye, Aderhold and Seminick got the other homers. - The Sporting News - May 13, 1943, page 10
  • A protest by the Atlanta Crackers of a game, won by the Knoxville Smokies, 2 to 1, April 29, was thrown out by President Billy Evans. The kick came over an interference ruling by Umpire Dutch Hoffman, who called Outfielder Treadway of the Crackers out when he collided with Pitcher Coffman in running to first base, as the hurler was fielding the ball. Evans ruled the Atlanta protest lacked substantiation. - The Sporting News - May 13, 1943, page 10

  • Herb Anderson pitches nifty ball for Knoxville against Atlanta, allowing only five hits and winning, 6 to 1, five errors by Crackers aiding his cause no little. Cozart, Cortes and Chitwood pitch for Atlanta, giving up ten hits.. - The Sporting News - May 27, 1943, page 15
  • Pushing across three runs in top of ninth against Reliefer Tom Murray, Knoxville stops second-place Barons, 9 to 7, when third Smoky pitcher, Herb Anderson, quells Birmingham threat to salvage game for Steve Warchol, winning Knoxville tallies coming on two passes, force play, Matthews' single and Cy Roberts' double. - The Sporting News - May 27, 1943, page 15
